Connecticut Foundations of Reading Test (FORT) Practice Exam & Prep

The term 'text complexity' refers primarily to the difficulty level of vocabulary and structure in a text. This aspect encompasses various factors, including the sophistication of the language used, the organization of ideas, and the overall comprehensibility of the text for its intended audience. Text complexity is crucial as it affects the reader's ability to engage with and understand the material.

While factors such as the length of the text and the genre can influence how challenging a text might be, they do not define text complexity in a comprehensive sense. For example, a long text could still be easy to read if it uses simple vocabulary and straightforward sentences. Similarly, illustrations may enhance understanding but do not determine the complexity of the text itself. Therefore, focusing on vocabulary and structural elements provides a clearer insight into how challenging a text may be for readers.
